Do you often find it difficult getting the most out of relationships? If so, learning how to leverage business relationships can be extremely beneficial. This will help you achieve a desired outcome and create positive opportunities for all parties involved. Meeting new people and creating relationships with those who have common goals can greatly inspire and assist you in any venture you have going. A relationship involves the connection between two people, so it is important to remember that when leveraging, both sides must benefit.
Learning from the mistakes of market leaders is highly valuable to any entrepreneur. The majority of people take away about one or two things that they can implement in their business. However, it is fairly uncommon for someone to leverage the relationship that they have created. By leveraging the relationship, you are creating a win win situation with key players. Be prepared to give as much value as possible before asking for a favor.
Determining your value or usefulness to someone may be difficult if you don’t know much about them. Start by introducing yourself and ask questions about who they are and what they do. Then you can evaluate your own skill set and decide what you may be able to offer them. It may be to suggest marketing techniques or to offer connections you may have that align with what they are doing. The idea is to provide as much value as possible, and hopefully they can and are willing to return the favor. In my experience, these return in favors don’t come frequently, but when they do, they often come at the perfect time for my business.
Where To Start
One of the first relationships I built when starting my business in real estate was the relationship with my mentor. I wanted to start my business off on the right foot so I sought out a mentor who was getting the results I wanted today. Now, the question is, “How do you find a mentor?”
Here is one key thing to consider when seeking out the right mentor for you. Be cautious of the person who has had massive success in yesterday’s market. Some business owners have made a fortune in previous markets, yet if they implemented their same strategies today, they would fail miserably. The business world is very dynamic, which is why it is crucial to stay up to date on the strategies that are finding success now.
I’m not trying to say that that same person wouldn’t make it, but I am saying they found success with old, out-dated strategies.
As you begin or continue in business, always keep your eyes and ears open for that secret sauce that no one else can see.
Where To Find And Add Value
Whatever your product may be, wouldn’t you be able to get more sales if you had the help of someone who dominated that particular market, aka a market leader. They would be able to assist in more efficient and productive ways to sell your product? In reality, most people have no idea how to get someone to market for them. I suggest to start attending networking events and even a mastermind group.
By attending these type of events, you will be meeting new people and creating relationships with others who will be able to help in a variety of ways. Many individuals who you’ll meet will be able to offer advice and provide other connections for you. The majority of people attending these type of events are more than happy to connect individuals together who share a common cause.
Do Your Job
Once you’ve learned to leverage the relationships you’ve created, some amazing doors may open up for you. It is your job to walk through them and get things done.
Entrepreneurs are sometimes under the impression that they don’t have an actual job. One reason for this is they don’t have to clock in for someone else. All entrepreneurs have to be cautious not to get caught in this trap. This type of mentality can cause us to possibly become lazy and unaware of how little or big of an impact we are having in our business. Unless you are exactly where you want to be in your business and have reached all your goals, keep a close eye on it and never let up.
State Your Goals
If you are trying to get something specifically done, be up front about it. The sooner you address your objective, the sooner the other person can decide for themselves if they can add value and benefit from you as well. If you beat around the bush you come across as amateur and difficult to work with. People in business appreciate when you are up front with what you want and what you can give. Some people may be taken back by how honest you are up front, however, most will appreciate you for doing just that.
Acknowledgment
It is important to acknowledge the person while thanking them for their time. Sometimes a mere thank you or a thoughtful email or text is enough to make a lasting impression. Make sure the individual knows you are grateful for the help since no one appreciates feeling taken advantage of. If you show gratitude and come across different from everyone else, then you will be remembered better than the rest.
Communication is Key
Regardless of who you are in front of, make sure you are communicating well. The number one thing you can do when meeting someone new is to listen. Attempt to understand the person by asking appropriate questions. The worst thing you can do is to interject your thoughts too soon so that they are unable to finish their own thought.
If communicating well, a moment will arise when you are able to share your message. This may be who you are, what business you run, or what you are in search of to further your business. No matter what your message is, there will be a time to share it. If there is mutual respect between you, then they will gladly hear you out.
Final Thoughts
Everyone you meet has knowledge about something that you don’t know. When forming new relationships, especially those at networking events and masterminds, keep in mind that others are there for the same reasons you are. Everyone is striving to make connections and accelerate their business just like you.
You never know, the next person you meet may change your life forever if you leverage the relationship properly.
